Looking for recommendations on a return pump for an 80g tank. Single corner overflow, durso style plumbing. I'm currently using my return from my 120g but it's very much overpowered such that the gate valve is nearly closed.

Using vinyl tubing for the return line, and looking at probably 4-5' head max. I don't need the return to provide primary flow either.

If not a specific pump, what kind of gph range should I really be aiming for?

Ready, set, go!

Most pumps online have the flow stats available. Size of your drain line will determine the flow you need. One 1" drain should flow in the neighborhood of 600gph. Measure your head height. Select your pump to approximately one that will flow just under 600gph at the measured head height. You can upsize slightly if you tap off the return to feed refusiums, gfo/carbon reactors etc. For my tank with two 1" overflows I'm running a mag 18 rated at over 11oo gph at five foot head and it seems to be a perfect match. Be aware that bends in the drain and return lines will affect flow. Hope this helps.
