I been running a 10+ year old supreme mag drive pump.
Thinking about switching to a D.C. pump
Just wondering about the reliability of them.
Any advice or suggestion?

I have the Sicce Syncra SDC 9.0 and love it. Zero noise and built in wifi controls.

Tough to beat the longevity of mag pumps. I have a couple that are close to 10 years old.
But they are mixing pumps and water transfer pumps. Way too loud to use on my tanks.
I think the vote is still out on most of the dc pumps. Most haven't been around that long.

I'm hoping my Red Dragon pumps give me at least that long.

I'm sure glad the wife doesn't care about the sound.
I have a security camera on my tank and what I can't see I'm able to tell if someone is off by the sounds of each pump.
Few years ago I remember a lot of people was complaining about DC pumps failing prematurely
I'm just wondering if this is still the case?

I think most of the issues with the early dc pumps failing were mostly jeboas.
I've seen a few issues with the Vectra L1, but not so many with the Vectra M1.
The VarioS pumps are suppose to be pretty solid, but they are new too.

I bought a new Jebao marine DC pump, from a quality lfs, for the aquarium I set up in April of this year. Within weeks I was seeing rust on the exposed 'stainless' steel screws and nuts. Even then, I thought it was probably just superficial. Then I saw rust starting to work it's way out of a seam between two parts of the volute/case. About this time, Triton Labs tells me my water is quite high in TIN, a major source of which is, you guessed it, rusting metal.

So, that DC pump wasn't so great. I've since replaced it with a Reef Octo VarioS-6 DC pump, which is Apex-ready and also includes an optional float switch which plugs directly into the pump's variable speed controller. Seems much better built than the Jebao pump; for one thing, no exposed metal parts. Super quiet, with higher volume flow than the other one. I guess we'll see about longevity.
