I just pulled my return pump out to do some cleaning. My tank has been up for like 14 months and I have yet to pull it out for a cleaning.. eek.. Anyway I noticed the wire shielding did not cover the wires all the way to the pump body.. Can this cause an issue or maybe stray voltage? I’m not the most swift with electrical..

I have a return pump like this I use for waterchange water mixing. Been like this for well over a year with biweekly use for water changes. I’ve never been shocked but I definitely wouldn’t trust it in the display. I would consider getting it repaired or replaced soon.

Is tbe pump ac or dc?

Ac pump yes, Dc pump not really.

It also depends if the pump windings are sealed in epoxy and that is just a strain relief.

I would dry it, even bake it in oven at 40c or around there. Then seal woth epoxy or silicon.

Thanks for the response! I bought my set up used and it came with it. So I’m not sure how old the pump is in the first place so I was thinking of replacing it. This may tip my in that direction..

Do you plug it right into the socket or is there a speed controller?

To be honest I’m not really happy with the amount of flow I’m getting out of this pump anyway.. Am I looking for an excuse for a new toy? Possibly.. [emoji12] I see the ecotech vectras don’t get the best reviews.. my tank is a 70 gallon. Would you guys think the various 6 would do the job well?

I see reviews about the eco tech failing after less then a year. One review said they the pump was running super hot. Like 140 degrees. So that freaks me out a bit

Looks like a Varios. If it is contact CoralVue . They may cover it under warranty.

It’s a reef octopus rodc 5500. They don’t make them anymore. I bought my set up used. So the pump was included. So I don’t even know how old it is. But I swung by WWC today and picked up a reef octopus Varios 6. [emoji12]

Lucky you having WWC right down the road.

Your return pump should not be a significant amount of flow in your display tank. That size pump should be just fine on your tank. If you just want a new toy, I’m super happy with my Varios 8 pumps. They are silent and have given me no problems so far. I run one of them as the return at 2/5 which gives me 700 GPH, which is just fine for my 220 gallon display and 70 gallon sump. Any more and it sounds like a waterfall into the filter sock area.

I ended up with the 6. I can’t even get it past the “2” speed.. lol but it does give me room to add reactors down the line if I need them. I was planning on adding a carbon reactor at some point. So, I have plenty of room to add things on to this pump. Lol
