I'm setting up a 180 gallon reef tank with 2 build in corner overflows with 1" drains my sump is going to be in my basement that I have to pump the water up 11 feet I was thinking of using the 1" SCWD wave maker for the returns
My question is what is a good external return pump that will pump the water that far and somewhat energy efficient and not over drive the drains thanks For your time Todd

From the basement to the top of a 180 gallon tank is only 11 feet? The tank and stand are probably around 5 feet or more on their own. Especially after including plumbing details, I'm guessing it's probably more like 16 feet of head pressure. Please confirm if I'm wrong - you may need to upgrade one or more sizes on the pump recommendations so far.

I would agree with mcarroll plus every fitting, etc adds to the total head height. I would look into the panworld or blueline series of pumps.

Yeah I came home and remeasured 11' max. Sorry should have explained my living room is foot and a half lower then the main house so it's thru the wall and there is the basement. So basically I would have 2 45 degree elbows and 11' of PVC should be all of the plumbing. Hope that makes sense and thanks for the help and info guy's. Todd

Makes sense now! Sweet arrangement for a basement sump as you have many more pump choices than most folks with that scenario! Still one clarification...how much of that 11' is up and how much is across?

Something relatively moderate like a Blueline 55, or even a submersible like the Mag 18 recommended earlier (that or the Quiet One are prolly my picks from the recommendations so far) should do the trick, which I define as delivering about 4x your display volume in GPH...or 700+ gph.

It's 7' up and 4' across. Yeah it nice cause there is a grate in the wall right there so no holes I have to put in so I was just going to modify the grate after I get all plumbing ran thru and put the grate back on.
The only reason I was thinking external was because of heat I didn't know if a mag drive or that quiet one would produced that much heat in the water but that's a lot of water ha. I have a mag 9.5 on my 75 now I don't have any heat issues but I'm not making it pump 11' foot either so I didn't know. I know they can both be run both ways internal or external. Thanks again Todd

If you are running LED lighting, the heat will not be an issue. Your heaters may run a little less, but that's worst case scenario. ;)

I think you would be more satisfied with a submersible, personally. Mags and Quiet One are two good brands.

Yeah I think I'm going to with a mag drive I'm happy with one I have in my 75 gallon have heard good things about the quiet one tho.
No I have t-5's in my canopy with fans on the end no MH's tho. Thanks again for help Todd
