Hey

I am making a 200litre (40 ish) gallon tank and i was wondering how powerful my return pump should be i was think 400l/h but wasnt to sure also it will be in a 100 litre sump cheers guys

Usually for a sump return we do about 5x turnover, and the rest of the flow in tank via PH's or loop, 20x minimum, 30-40x for mixed reef, more for sps dominant.

Sorry but your going to have to explain that in a little more detail I am quite new to this (completely)

If you have 40 gallons total water volume and you have a return pump in your sump, then 5 times your volume would be the flow rate through your sump. So 40X5= 200 GPH. (Gallons Per Hour)

Now depending on your livestock, you will need additional flow in your display tank. Some people use a closed loop system, others just use power heads. This flow will be much higher than the flow through your sump. So 40 gallon total volume X 20 or 40X20= 800 gph More flow for SPS dominant tank. 40X35= 1400 gph.

So you'll have a 200 GPH return pump AND another 800-1400 GPH power heads in the display tank.
