I am upgrading my 40b to a 75g. Currently I have my sump below the 40. For the 75 I would like to get a 70 gal Rubbermaid stock y
Tank and put it in the basement. I have no idea what size return pump I would need for this. All together it will be around 13ft to 14ft from the basement to the tank.

Fork over the money and invest into a good name brand from the get go. Overhead pressure kills pumps, better to have a good pump that's built to handle the overhead then buy something cheap and end up having to spend that much more money on the expensive one you should have gotten to start with.

That being said. There are a few pumps that come to mind if the basement isn't finished and no one goes down there you could go with a external pump like a reeflo. But they are like all the similar pumps noisy from vibration. You might even be able to hear them upstairs vibrating the PVC return line. Not to mention the power consumption of these pumps and similar counter parts is very high for the GPH your getting. The power consumption and heat is why I personally stay way clear of them.

I would highly recommend the ecotech vectra L1 that'll give you plenty of turnover on the tank. The ecotech vectra M1 would be overkill unless you plan on later replacing the 75g DT with something much larger in the future. They are DC pumps so they are adjustable, dead silent, almost zero vibration and the power comsumption is very low. Not to mention ecotechs warrenty and customer service is arguably the best out there.

Ive had both the ecotech vectra L1 and M1 myself. The L1 was plenty for my 220g SPS DT that sits 15+ feet away in the adjacent room uphill with a couple more 90 elbows that I would have like to of not used but had no choice. The only reason I upgraded to the M1 is because I split the return line to also feed a 55g tank 6ft away and 4ft up from the return that is plumbed into my 400g total water volume system. The L1 was just a tad shy of providing the turnover I wanted into both tanks or would still be up and running. My point being your not going to have even half the overhead I had on my L1 so it'll be plenty for your 75g. Again unless your going to upgrade which the L1 will still be more then enough power for. But having that little extra adjustable power of an M1 wouldn't hurt. This is my two cents.
