What would be the best size return pump for a 93gal display w/ 30l sump. The sump will also house an ATB 840. Thanks

What size is the overflow?
Do you want internal or external?
I would pick a pump that would return water to the main tank at 3x to5x the tank volume.

Ok thanks... Its an internal overflow with i think a 2'' drian. I have a mag 7 or a mag 9.5 to chose from. So it sounds like the mag 7 would be the best fit.

If you are going with a internal, then I would look at a Eheim 1260.
Sometimes those mags can be a little noisey, and it is going to be a little more flow than what I would pick.

DFS has the mag 7 listed as 450 gph at 3 feet. My tank is very tall and would have a head height of about 6 feet. The return will also be going into a SCWD which will lower the gph even more. Does this still sound like too much flow? The 1260 is just a lil bit more than i would want to spend(seeing as i already have the Mag 7) and the HY-3000 is way more than i want to spend. But if i must i will.

My experince with mag pumps ( I've had 3's, 5's, 7's, 9.5's, and 12's) tells me that while they may (or not) start out as acceptable for noise, that within a few months or so they start getting louder, until one day you wonder where all that racket is coming from. The mag 12 I had was used for a external closed loop pump for 10 months, until it woke me up early one morning.
I would think that with your plans to use a mag you already own is a great way to save a few $ for now, but if it does get to the point you want a quieter pump, look at the eheims.
I think you would be in the area of flow you would want with the mag 7

give it a try, it may be perfect.:)

Thanks for the reply. Maybe ill just save myself the headache and get the 1260. Last ? i think ......If i do get the 1260 how would i have to connect it to my SCWD which is for 3/4" tubing. Dfs says the 1260's output is 5/8th". Sorry if its dumb ?... i have never had to set up the plumbing for a tank..
