I am setting up a new 90 gallon tank with a center maga-flow overflow, tank is 48x18x24. I believe that the max flow rate is 600 gph, I have a Triton 3, 850 gph I plan on using as the return pump with approx. 4 feet of head and zero bends. I'm just wondering if that is going to be enough flow, as the pump is rated for more gph than what the overflow says it produces at 600 gph. I now that this is an older pump and there are newer and better out there but I have had zero issues with this pump and it runs dead silent. Thank you in advance for any feed back...

Thanks again and keep on reefing!!!!

I guess you could put a ball valve and throttle it down. Id even get a bigger one and use a ball valve. Youd be surprised how quickly you want more flow.

you will need to look up the pump curve, this will tell you the flow at 4' head

What type of drain system are you using? If you are using the "mega-flow" as a durso with it being the only drain line you will be lucky to get 350gph, and even then it will be noisy. 250-300gph is closer to acceptably quiet.

If, OTOH, you have it set up as a Herbie or Beananimal, you could run way more water through it than 600gph.

have it set up with the piping that came with it, 1in drain and 3/4 return

Can see if can quiet it with valves(i likegate valves they turn easier in 5 years than a ball.
Sump to display flowrate ime gains few benefits after adequate flow. I like how easy it is to quiet a dc pump with a herbie as opposed to an ac, but ac pumps last longer.

But its far easier to make flow with in tank power heads then a return pump. If were trying to use to remove power heads id plumb it differently with dual return pumps. One for each side of the tank, both dc with rfg nozzels.

A single 1" gravity drain won't handle anywhere near 600gph.

You'll want to use a valve (gate valve is best, but ball is okay) on the pressure side of the return pump to tune it down enough to get the overflow safe and quiet.

If you want to set up a Herbie drain, using both holes in the overflow and running the return over the back, we can talk about that.

why would they send that set up for there overflow knowing that it will not reach what they say it will handle? not looking to run external return lines, I guess I will see what lfs has for larger bulk heads.

Good question. It will be fine if you valve down the return pump.

You might not be able to find a larger bulkhead that will still fit into the hole that's drilled.
