pieces of chaeto keeps getting into the return pump area and strands ending up in my display. I was thinking of putting a piece of filter sock over the return pump opening to keep the chaeto from getting pumped into the main tank
Will this cause any issues with my return pump ?
any other suggestions?

I'd put a sponge or filter before the return section or after the fuge. That low ppi black plastic wiry stuff that's firm enough to stand on its own.

Blocking intake of pump can cause over heating and damage to pump. Assuming you'll have clog build up.

Thus black pad. I am surprised you do not already have it. The problem I run into is pieces of chaeto getting into my skimmer.

Darn!! I have some but I cut it into pieces to fit just right and now they’re not tall enough to prevent the overflow pieces to get into the return pump area. Maybe I can sew a few together ‍♀️

I ordered one from BRS this past week. I wanted some for the top of my filter cups. I did not realize how stiff the stuff was. It was like cutting through metal.

The Trigger Systems replacements are much easier to cut. Even if you don’t have one of their sumps I’d think you could trim and use one of the sizes they offer. Here’s a link for next time.
