I started reefing this summer with a 32 biocube but but the bug and scored a 65 gallon a couple weeks ago. As I put this back together I am upgrading some of the equipment. I am struggling with what size return pump I need as I find so many answers online. Ideas?

Probably the same ideas you've already researched. It's about your choices really. If you were new reefer I'd recommend starting with Sicce AC pump (I don't like recommend expensive DC pumps to folks just starting out even though they definitely have benefits). If budget is a concern, you really can't beat the Sicce AC line. Quiet and under cabinet you can't hear it. Just put valve on outlet for adjusting flow but ideally you select size so valve is almost fully open and only adjusted for changes in drain.

If you want to run a manifold and lots of gear off the return, you might want higher head pressure than flow and now your into pump curves.

If you're putting a UV on you may want adjustable flow. Of course, you may want to drill a separate line just for that (recommended) and put a DC pump on that.

Is the return going to be primary flow which means larger pump and that might drive you to DC pump for noise issue with large AC pumps.

So yeah, it's up to you really. Stick with name brands that have good warranties and good reviews once you decide what kind of system you need.

Good luck!
