Just how large does the return section need to be ? Or even better how small can I make it?
I'm reconfiguring the baffles of a sump to increase the size of the refugium section. Is there an average return section size per sump/tank size?

Just big enough to be able to get the return pump in/out. Much bigger than that is kind of a waste IMO
Thanks ! didn't even know You replied . All I need is room for the pump & ato sensor. I would think if the section is real small the ato would be very touchy . however in my situation i would deal with it !
Anybody else ?

I would make the return section as small as possible because:
  1. If drain or overflow plugs, less water to overflow the DT and hopefully not even overflow. ( I make sure the DT can hold all the water from the return section when building a system)
  2. More room for other things under the stand (fuge, ATO reservoir, skimmer,...)
  3. Salinity is more stable because the ATO sensor is more sensitive

My return section occupied 100% of my sump. I still don't see any need for baffles. ;) It's nice to have the space.

(I'm a live rock+skimmer guy, so no fancy stuff like refugiums.)
