Hello R2R new reefer here, 1st question? I have a 40 gallon breeder and a 20gal long for sump. I will be drilling my tank for a synergy ghost overflow. So for a return line from sump to DT do i use a 3/4" or 1/2"??

What size pump will you be using for the return? Will You have a powerhead in the 40 for circulation? The diameter of the output on the pump would be best. When pumps & tanks get a lot bigger, diameter of the return line can change things depending. You will like the synergy overflow !

I would go with the largest pipe you can fit. Frictional loss increases with decreasing pipe diameter. If you're using a branded pump, see if it's on one of the head loss calculators and you'll be able to look at 1/2 inch versus 3/4 inch pipe.

How much flow are you looking to run? I have 3/4 return on mine and i'm pushing between 600 and 700 gallons per hour.

So the pump i will be using for the return is a syncra silent 2.0(568gph) will this be enough? For circulation I will be using 2 Jebao pp-4. This is my 1st SW tank so I have a lot of questions.

Check out THIS thread.

I would go one size up from the output of the pump to cut down on friction if you are going to use PVC pipe.

You want 3 to 5x the DT for turn over.

Don't forget to take head loss, friction, 90's, and 45's into account as they will all slow down your pump.
