Returning to the hobby after 50 years

Welcome back to the hobby!

Like you, I had been out many years (roughly 30 yrs) and man has it changed! Info is easier to find and you can order just about everything on line. The biggest change for me was not being able to find live rock as easy as it used to be and the availability of equipment, but many positive changes!

Welcome back! Talk about a blast from the past.
There is probably going to be some sticker shock, especially for livestock in particular. But it's an exciting time. Lots of new methodologies forming as we speak (bacterial biome, treatments, etc). Lighting is better than ever. Happy retirement.

Greetings & Salutations To One And All!

In my heyday, I had a out 20 assorted sized tanks, freshwater and saltwater.

At the time I was also an early member of the Central Ohio Aquarium Society ( COAS).

Now that I am retired and no longer extensively traveling for work I once again have the time.

I have a HUGE learning curve to overcome as most of the technology existing today just did not exist back then.

Most likely it will be awhile before I break out my Credit Card but most likely I will be getting back into saltwater which has brought me here.

Lots of research and study to be accomplished before then and no doubt during that time I will be reaching out to the membership here for much needed information and advice.

Blessed Be

While I have not been in touch with anyone in the community for decades, I do remember a newspaper interview with the owner of a semi local company that was actually propagating Coral as well as Live Rock.

I will try to jog my memory and perhaps do a little research on your behalf and post my findings here.

Welcome and thanks for joining....

My span between tanks was from more or less '78 and grad school and '20 and Covid recovery - so we are kindreds spirits

one thing that is the same is that Anthrax has no place in the reef tank

Being a huge fan of Monty Python, I chose that ID from Yellowbeard. If I tried to use the other name, I would have been kicked out of here before my first post.

BTW, the photo I am using as my avatar is actually me

Welcome to the REEF!
I followed a similar but much more modest path... after 25 years started back up. Keeping it very simple. no sump no hang on back, no canister
Lots of live rock, water movement and a modest internal sponge filter.
not much need to reinvent the wheel auto dosing is nice.
Have fun, start a build thread and keep us posted :)

Welcome to R2R, and welcome back to the hobby.
There’s definitely been a change or two in this hobby in the last few years, but don’t be intimidated! Plenty of help and advice on this site to save your fish, corals and wallet a lot of pain!
