I think having the return come out of the overlow would look better, but I believe it would WORK better to have them come out of the back or each corner. What are your guys thoughts. I am getting ready to order a 240 and am trying to plan as much ahead of time as possible. Thanks

Depends... If you have to drill the tank for the return it would be better to run it from the outside since more holes equals more chance for leaks. If the holes are already drilled then sure go for the better look.

Personally I think your flow should be in the tank, for your corals. That's how they clean them selfs of their slime and poop. Flow on top is great but you would have that going into your filter anyways. Use them as over flows and not as a return. You can make a nice return and eliminate wave makers?

This tank will be made to my specifications. I can put the returns anywhere. I'm thinking I should go with returns away from overflow, that way I'm not pushing away what I want to go down the overflow

I would say use a ghost overflw type or a glass-holes type and go over the top for the returns. Overflow boxes are terribly big and take up a lot of your tank real estate plus are a big issue for flow control.
