Dear all,

I have 30kg of old sand (not used nearly 3 months) which have black colour and smell awful. It is difficult to buy chemitry to solve in my area. I intend to reuse these for my new tank follow these steps.

1. Cleaning with RO/DI.
2. Boiling the sand for an hour.
3. Sun bathing for some days.

So is it ok or not.

The smell is decomposing organic material. I personally would not do that I would use old rock but never sand it just collects way too much and usually causes alot of headachs.

Read this:
Or talk to @brandon429 he is an expert on this.

my guess is you can simply put the sand in a bucket, run a hose in the bottom of the bucket until it fills up and stir the sand over and over until the water runs completely clear. I’m assuming it’s black sand? Just a fair warning- black sand contains metal and will stick to a magnetic algae scraper if you use one and scratch your tank. Just FYI
And welcome to R2R!

not worth the effort.
To rinse new, 1/3 the water rinses or less vs used.
Use tap water until the last rinse.
