I recently bought a used 90 gallon tank that was previously freshwater. There was quite a bit of what I believe is crushed coral substrate that came included. Would I be able to use this substrate for salt? It looks to be pretty course, and I would like to have some sand sifting fish. Are they compatible with course substrate?

I'm guessing it would be good to thoroughly rinse it before, but would it be worth the work to keep? Could I use a bag or 2 of live sand to give me a head start with the bacteria? I'll try to post a picture of the 10 gallon it came in, maybe you guys can help me figure out what I've got.

Post some close up pics for what you have.

The answer to your question is that you can reuse the sand after a good cleaning with freshwater and let it dry out in the sun.

For the goby, you would need to make sure it isn't the larger crushed coral that they like to use for cichlids, because there is a good chance of choking. Also if left alone, will cause nitrate pockets since mulm and detritus will be trapped.

This is the substrate. Any advice?

Alright thanks for the replies. I guess I need to decide whether I want to save some money and keep the current substrate or get new, more fine, sand that will be compatible with a goby. Those little guys just look so cool! I think it's gonna be tough.

If you'd u can afford getting the sand, I'd recommend it. Come back with the chooses you, make and we'll help make the decision. Skip the Fiji pink. [emoji6]
