I have been trying different methods to decrease the noise the drain pipe makes going into the sump. How do you correctly do a reverse durso? I am using a 1.5 inch drain but decreased to 1 inch before the bulkhead. Should the rest of the sump plumbing be 1 inch? Please post pictures if possible.

I haven't tried the herbie method in the sump. This is what I have. image.jpeg

This would replace the drain you have in your tank, it isn't in the sump.

yeah. That's going to be a loud drain no matter what. That's why I dislike reef-ready tanks. Sure, they're drain-ready, but it's a loud durso, and no safety factor built in.

check to see, maybe the hofer gurgle buster may help

That's my current setup. The overflow part is quiet. The drain going into the sump has too much turbulence.

Now the sump tubing was jus time trying different stuff out. Nothing is permanent. I will take a look at the gurgle buster.

I am listening; -)

I have had a durso in my current tank and it does make a lot of noise. I have been looking for way to improve this in my new tank. People claim that if the durso is done correctly, it should be quiet. I think my problem is the water level inside the overflow causes the noise issue. I raised the neck of the durso higher this time. I looked at the examples on the Web and most of them have the durso neck up high....of course not higher than the tank water level or the floor will be where the water drains to

My dursos were never quiet.

The other issue with them is there's no backup or failsafe in case something happens. If it can happen, it will.....as I'm sure most of you guys are seeing!

So what is the best solution? This plumbing is holding me back from starting my tank cycle.

I have 2 holes in my over flow box.... I think we all know The risk ;-) however , drilling another hole is a lot more risk for me.

I plan to have a float switch to cut the power to the return pump and the ato as well as sending me an notification when the float switch triggers

I've done a bunch of water outage tests on the system and so far the overflow siphon holes are doing their job. I have a 30 gallon sump so the entire overflow water can fit in the sump with 2 inches to spare.

Have the drain hose/pipe goes into a sock. That should help on the noise and the micro bubbles. I had that before in the beginning . After a while when my macro thrived, I cut a hole on the side for the pods to get out of the trap sock

That's my current setup. The overflow part is quiet. The drain going into the sump has too much turbulence.

I think you should look into the Herbie setup. It will mean you need to run a pipe up for your return, but it is dead silent and it has a backup drain.

How deep does your drain pipe go into your sump? If it is any deeper than one inch, try it at 1/2" to 3/4" to see if it helps.
