Well the wife and I have been talking recently and after having my JBJ Rimless 30 setup for about 6 months now we have decided we are in love with salt water tanks. So after giving it some thought I have decided to give up on freshwater and do strictly saltwater. The previous owners of our house went for a very open feel when they did some remodeling, because of this the kitchen, dining and living rooms are one giant room to an extent. My freshwater tank is currently in my dining room so I can view it from the couch or kitchen. The wife wants something to kind of break up all of rooms. I suggested a peninsula style reef tank. Much to my surprise she immediately jumped on board.

My freshwater tank currently consists of:

Tank: Aqueon 40 Breeder
Stand: DIY
Light: Current USA Nova Extreme 2x39 watt T5HO
Filter: Fluval 305 Canister Filter
Heater: Aqueon Pro 200 Watt Heater

My plan is to re-use everthing except the filter.

The plan is to take the tank and get a Glass Holes 700 GPH Overflow and drill one of the short sides of the tank. I will take the stand I have and tear it down to the frame so I can make the stand fit the peninsula design better. I also plan to add some sort of a canopy to hide my lighting. I am going to keep the dual bulb T5HO fixture and put in an ATI Purple Plus and an ATI Coral Plus bulb. I also think I will add some DIY led lighting to take care of the rest of the lighting and add more blue. More on this to come.

For the sump I think I am also going to use a 40 breeder for a sump, the reason being is I want a larger refugium section to grow a very large colony of pods. After the tank has had plenty of time to establish itself and it's pod population I want to add a Mandarin Goby. I also want to keep filtration as simple as possible and as chemical and media free as possible. Because of this I want an Algae Turf Scrubber, in the refugium section I plan to use rubble, Chaeto and Xenia.

Enough rambling here is the equipment list that I currently am thinking:

Tank- Aqueon 40 Breeder
Stand- DIY
Light- Current Nova Extreme T5HO 2x39 and DIY LED
Heater- Aqueon Pro 200 Watt
Sump- 40 Breeder w/ Algae Turf Scrubber and Refugium
Overflow- Glass Holes 700 gph
Return Pump- Mag Drive 7
Skimmer- Reef Octopus 4 (open to suggestions)
ATO- Tunze Osmolator
Powerhead- Tunze 6025 x2
Controller- Reef Keeper Lite
Rock- Base Rock

Open to suggestions on the equipment....especially on the skimmer. This is the first "real" skimmer I have ever bought. Also, I plan to keep my power heads on the same wall with my overflow so as to only have equipment on only one wall so I want to make sure they are strong enough to provide proper flow to the opposite side of the tank. I don't intend to keep SPS. This tank will consists mainly of zoas and palys, a clam and multiple Wellsophyllia.

I will keep this thread updated any time anything new happens. I hope to start the stand deconstruction and part order the first of next week.

Wondering how it all went? I'm at the drill stage, got my 40 breeder(i went with a 20gallon Refugium). Hit me back with tips/pics.

PS: Do you think we can still get enough copepods to keep a mandarin alive? Super worried about starving one.
