Rhomboid wrasse struggles

Hey all,

What is it about rhomboids that makes .
them hard to keep, if that is true.

I have tried 3, and can’t get them to live past 4 days.

They go right into quarantine, like all my other fish, 1.75 copper power, and prazi pro.

The latest one came in Friday, prazi pro on Monday, dead on Tuesday. He did eat one time, but mostly stayed in between a piece of pvc elbow and the glass rest of the time until he was dead.

Wrasses are notorious for copper sensitivity. Have you tried ramping the copper up slowly (over a week) instead of throwing it all in in one or two doses?

Prazi can use a lot of oxygen as well. Are you supplementing your surface agitation appropriately?

Furthermore combining copper and prazi is not normally recommended. I would not do so, unless there was an emergency of some sort. That is a ton of medication on the fish all at once.

Copper was ramped up from 1.0 initial starting point, to 1.75 over 3 days.

I have had flame wrasses, hooded wrasse, anthias, angels, all go thru both copper and prazi at same time, rhomboid wrasse seems to be an ongoing issue .

As far as air agitation goes, if anything, I have too much. A big hang on filter crashing down about 5 inches into water, as well as an air stone .

Rhomboids for whatever reason are just overly sensitive fish.

Try the normal copper procedure as you mentioned minus the prazi.

Yeah if there are no tall tale signs of ich or velvet at the outset I would make sure the fish is eating well for a couple of days and then start prazi. Finish prazi and then slowly ramp up copper.

its worked for me in the past but again like others have stated Rhomboids can be sensitive and especially prone to internal parasites and worms so be prepared to treat with metro/GCI with focus.

I have tried a bunch over the years. Out of 5 times I tried to keep Rhomboids, only one had lasted 5-6 moths and it was a female that started to get better colors.... The others would die from 1-4 weeks time.

I recall the common theme of them all perishing was buoyancy issues. They would all come down with what looked to be Swim Bladder...

That being said, copper and fairy wrasses has been know to cause stress on them.

Good to know, thanks. And that really sucks, 1 out of 5, so basically spend a grand and hope one makes it lol.

If I do try again it will be from a place that has a gaurantee like this last time.

Didn’t know they were that temperamental, some sites list them as “easy”.
