Ribbon wrasse nipping on crocea clam

Hi Experts, noticed my ribbon wrasse is nipping on the crocea clam.. is this common? Anything can be done to stop the nipping? Thanks.

In your case it is common and it will stop once the clam meal is finished. Hopefully the wrasse is just an occasional grazer but it could kill the clam if they are not separated.

I have a Bird Wrasse that decided he wanted clam for dinner... and ate 2 Squamosa and 2 Maxima clams. It was an expensive meal... I personally have had a meal that expensive before.

Yeah it will likely end when there is no more clam left. In my experience even if a fish stops for a few weeks (which almost never happens) they get a hankering for more clam/fancy lps one day and they are back at it with spirit!

A quick update... i lost the fight with the wrasse... he managed to make a meal out of the expensive clam...

Guess it is bye bye to adding any clams in my tank. I should have started with a cheaper clams first...

Along time ago someone said; "If the clam dies, at least you still have a nice shell."

Your wrasse expects you to pick up fresh clam at the supermarket 1/month going forward.

stethojulis are known to not be reef safe, yes it is common for them to nip at clam mantles.

Yeah, stethojulis is a rarer genus to find in the hobby.

Honestly mine never bothered anything, even sexy shrimp, but I didn't keep clams. It was just WAY too active and needed to eat constantly, it was impossible to keep it happy in a 110 gallon.

So far never seen it nipping on coral tissue but mine will not let corals eat his favourite food like chopped up clams/fish/shrimp... he will still it right from the corals mouth. And yes.. he is the most active fish.. constantly zooming around looking for food. Starting to see his adult (yellow) coloration appearing as well.

Crazy neurotic fish that need a massive tank for all their swimming, but absolutely gorgeous if you can keep up with the constant feedings of small foods.

If I had an 8x4 tank again, I'd try another one in a heartbeat.

Here's a video of my Stethojulis balteata in my old 110 gallon. Sadly, this fish never settled down, and slowly lost weight, even with 6x daily feedings of frozen and pellets, and deworming with praziquantel.

Hi Experts, I am very interested in addind a couple of crocea and/or maxima.. now i know that stethojulis is a no no in a tank with clams... are there any other fish species that known to be not clam friendly? Hoping to keep a list handy next time I go to the LFS. Thanks.

Butterflies
Thalassoma, Larger Halichoeres, Stethojulis, and some other wrasses tend to be on the bad side of clams
