Wasn't sure where to post this.

So I am planning to have a dragonette and anthias in my tank eventually. I definitely have pods, and have seen come good sized ones. What I am not sure of is if I have the right ones for the desired fish to eat. They look like the pic attached. Do I need, or should I get some other pods and seed the tank with them? If so which are best?

Amphipods, and copepods are the two most popular. How big is the tank? You may need to regularly buy pods as a single dragonette can wipe out a pod population in a tank pretty quickly unless you can teach it to eat frozen food.

That is an amphipod and to large for a mandarin. You need copepods.
I collect those amphipods you have there by the bazillions.

Thank you very much. That is what I was concerned about.

It's a 240gal with a huge tub style sump that holds about another 50 gallons of water plus tons of LR. Once I get it seeded the Sump should be able to keep up.

There are a few different subtypes of copepods, what you've posted is definitely an amphipod, probably the most valuable part of your clean up crew.

Generally Tisbe and Apocyclops are the best and reproduce the quickest from what I've found.

@AlgaeBarn is here on reef2reef and have a wonderful staff that loves answering questions.

Look through their website to see the difference in the different types of pods. https://www.algaebarn.com/product/5280pods/

Thanks. I have talked to them about some things in the past.

Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions about getting pods for your tank!
You can email me at [email protected], or call me at (772)444-7637, M-F 9am-5pm MST.
We do not sell amphipod, which, depending on the species, are going to be too large for your fish to eat. We do sell copepods, which are more appropriately sized for your fish. I would recommend the 5280+ blend, as it will have the largest size variance in the bag for both age and species of the pods. If you prefer a specific species of pods, we also sell pods by single species on our website.
Here is a shameless plug for all of our pod options: https://www.algaebarn.com/product-category/premium-live-foods/copepods/
Thanks!
