Rimless Reef 3.0

Awesome to see you are back Sunny! I also had to leave the hobby for awhile due to some health issues. I'm excited to see how your new setup shapes up.

Sunny - your reefs have inspired my own and I still look to pictures of them this day. I'm glad to hear your healthy and back in the reef game. Will be keeping on this thread with great interest.

Best of luck and most importantly, health to you.

Thanks! It's good to hear from you. Its been a few years. I hope that your doing well and that your health issues are in order.

So, I'm thinking that in another month or so I'll fix up the ATI Sunpower. I just need to replace the fans and grab a hanging kit along with bulbs. I've been doing some thinking:

1. I don't want to add supplements to the MH currently hung over the tank. At present I wouldn't be able to have a dusk/dawn setting.

2. I'm finding it hard to photograph with the Radium MH's. My macro lens just doesn't like the Radium alone.

3. I always had better colors with T5.

I'll wait until I have corals in the tank before making the switch.

Well, not much to report at the moment. I did get a pair of Blacker Ice Clowns. I lost the male within 15 minutes of placing him in the tank. :( I had walked away to empty out the acclimation bucket and came back to find the clown dead on the floor. I know clowns can jump but the screen top wasn't even off for 10 minutes. I guess its a hard lesson learned.

Im now looking for a male clown to pair with the remaining female clown. I have a question for you clownfish keepers: Can I place any design male ocellaris with the Female Blacker Ice? I'm pretty sure I can as this is how they breed and mix to create variations. I just didn't know if the clown itself would know the difference and if it made it easier on pairing. I'm thinking of getting a male Black Clown or Nearly Naked Clown to pair with it.

Hey guys/gals,

I recently added a pair of Blacker Ice Clownfish to RR 3.0. The pair is doing great and settled in nicely. Initially I lost the smaller male clown due to an accident. The one seen in the pictures is his replacement. The original male decided to jump from the tank within 10 minutes of introduction. I had the screen top off of the tank and walked away to wash out the acclimation bucket. When I came back to replace the screen top I found the male, dead on the tile floor. It was a tragic loss and ill never again walk away from the tank without having the screen top over the reef.

So, I went back to my LFS and sought out another male Blacker Ice Clownfish. I didn’t know if it was a male, but males are always the smaller of the two when it comes to a pair so I took a chance. Upon introduction the two clowns paired up and have been inseparable ever since. Hopefully they will have many years of happiness in my reef.

I haven't shot photos of fish in a long time so please excuse the quality of the pictures. I'm a bit rusty and was shooting free hand. I need to get another tripod.

Check the gallery for more pictures of the pair.

They are a beautiful pair. I lost my female blacker ice last Saturday, found her on the floor, not sure why she jumped but the weird thing is the top was on. o_O

Does the female have a funky tail fin or does she keep it clamped down? Sure are pretty fish.

Good observation. Yes, I noticed the tail yesterday. The tail is deformed. She swims well and does not exhibit any issues so I'm not too concerned about. She's just that much more unique. ;)

Nice clowns! Sorry to hear about the jumping mishap.

Thanks! I'm never walking away with the top off again!

Thanks! Wow, that is strange. Although, I have known some fish to have Houdini like qualities. ha ha.

Great build thread, Sunny....I love designer clowns and those two are awesome!

Glad to see you back man! I'm working on my new tank build as well. Once I get it set up I'll also do a thread. Your clowns look good!

Hey SunnyX, how goes the new tank? Hope it's coming along well. I am looking forward to it maturing as I would guess you might be retrieving frags of some old favorites to grow out. Best of luck going forward and best of health too.

Thank you. The tank is doing well. Its an evolving project and quite a few things will be changing on the system. I have been planning to move to a larger system in the summer as I like to keep Tangs but am not 100% certain I will. My life is busy at the moment with work, health, and my family. This smaller setup is nice as it doesn't require much work and allows me to enjoy the hobby. Right now the tank is setup in a back room in the basement. A room where I keep my tools and have my workbench. The tank is only viewed and accessible to myself.

The one thing I am looking to change out is the skimmer. The Deltec AP851 is just too large for this system. It is so large that I have yet to have it produce any skimmate. The system has a light bioload so that may be the reason. Ill wait another month and see what develops.

A couple weeks back I added a Birds of Paradise SPS frag to test the waters and it is doing well. It is colorful, growing, and fully extends its polyps. Im thing that sometime next month I will start to add corals to the system. Im also looking into added a refugium and eventually getting My ATI T5 unit going again. I like MH but I have always had the best results with T5.

Hey everyone,

Not much to report but I think I'm in the market for a new skimmer as I believe the Deltec Ap851 is simply too large for this system. I have had it running for a couple months and while the neck does get dirty it has yet to collect any skimmate. While I may have only a few fish and corals there should be a sufficient amount of waste for a skimmer to collect. The tank went through a diatom and light green algae bloom with zero skimmate collected. Also factor into the equation that no filter media such as carbon or gfo is being run.

I've only ever run Deltec External recirculating skimmers so I'm unsure where to start for an in sump model.

I have been looking at:
- RO 150int
-RO SRO 1000
- Aquamaxx CO1
-ATB Nano One
-Deltec 1350/1351

So, that's where I'm at. Not sure if I'll wait and see if my Deltec will eventually start pulling out gunk as the bioload increases or get a smaller skimmer.

On the bright side, the few corals that are in the tank are growing and colored.

It's good to see things moving along nicely, hope it continues. Maybe Adam@Battlecorals can help you with a new Deltec choice. Just for reference I have a skimmer, not a Deltec, rated up to 150gal on my 65 gal and it pulls a ton of junk out.
