Not advertising for anyone here but just wanted to pass along what I found to be an excellent kit for DIY tank lid. My tank was sold by my LFS so it's his own "brand" and not any "name" brand on the market today. I looked for quite a while and was not happy with anything I saw until finding this kit. I elected to buy two smaller kits and divide my lid into two halves and it worked out perfectly.
As you can see from the pictures, the aluminum frame has a 1/4" lip which sits on the top of the glass and allows the rest of the frame to recess below. If you're precise with your cuts you can make for a really great fit. You can use a hack saw but I was fortunate enough to have a dremel with cutoff disc and it made quick work of cutting the frame to length.
Anyway, hope this helps someone who's been/looking for a tank lid kit.
