Just curious about the reliability of rimless vs braced tanks. I live in a condo so I am very concerned about any water leaking. I have heard a few stories of whole panes splitting off but just how rare is that? What is the life expectancy of rimless tanks and are there obvious signs that the tank is about to split apart?

If built to the proper specifications rimless tanks are totally reliable. I prefer a style of tank that hides the water line.

If you purchase from a reputable manufacturer/builder there are no issues with normal usage with a rimless tank compared to a rimmed tank. Typically rimless use thicker glass than rimmed tanks which allows more silicone area for adherence. You do have to support the bottom correctly (entire area). Braced tanks just need support on either end so stand selection figures into this as well.

So...go with what looks good to you. I weighed this back and forth for months. You'll hear it's easy to slop water out of rimless (it's easier, but if you're careful no issue), some don't like looks of waterline...I don't mind at all. Almost purely subjective unless you have some specific use case that might require an extra level of strength - extremely large tank, or maybe you'll be constantly moving, etc.
