Rinsing Rock and Sand

There are a great deal of questions to your question, if that makes sense.

Rock- Dry rock, live rock?
Sand- New or old? Dry or "live"?

Each one of the above can be done differently, with different methods.

For example, Dry rock may need to be placed in a acid bath to remove dried/dead organics and possibly power washed after to remove the residue. Then placed in a container with RO/DI water long enough to let any phosphates leach out before "curing" can be done.

Just need more information.

I should've been more specific but I just meant what yall have done with what type of sand/rock you guys have. Your answer summed it all up lol

I wash the unused dry sand with tap water. I wash the unused dry rock with RO water (the rock can absorb unwanted water). For the freshwater aquarium, I wash both with tap water.

Way back when I set up my 210 I used walt smith fiji live rock I cured the rock in tank. It worked out quite well with very little die off and a fast cycle time. I no longer use live rock and just re use what I still have from that original system and is now dry. I have used it in my last two systems and the rock gets an acid bath before being re used. I also have re used the sand from that very system. It gets the old garden hose in a 5 gallon bucket rinse until the water runs clear and then its GTG.
