I'm setting up my 90 gal tank and I was wondering if its ok to rinse my sand with tap water?? Obviously I'll be using RO water when the tank is actually up and running. Didn't know if rinsing the substrate with tap water would have any detrimental effect in the future.

Some may disagree, my personal feeling is it's fine to rinse with tap water.....

Rinsing will kill the bacteria... I have always just rinsed mine with the hose outside. It has never been an issue. Just make sure you let the majority of the water drip out before using it. I typically use an old pillowcase as it makes a nice filter.

Rinsing w/tap water would def. kill bacteria but I'm going off the assumption that bigfoot is talking about unused new in the bag sand......

Yes, they are brand new bags of sand. Does that change any opinions? Thanks.

I have had no trouble rinsing with tapwater but if it is live sand why would you do this? Put in tank and place a bowl in tank and pour water into bowl to fill. It will get cloudy but it will clear. Don't destroy the benefical bacteria in the live sand.

RINSE! My whole driveway was covered in the filth that came from 3 bags of sand and it still made my tank cloudy afterward. The bacteria will grow back in time. If you are adding it to a new tank without any livestock then nothing to worry about putting it all in at once. If you already have livestock in the tank take your time introducing the new sand.

Where in this post does it say LIVE sand?

Yea it isn't live sand. Just normal dry substrate.
