Rinsing sand with normal water

I'd expect it to be pretty fast when you are rinsing it, but you can minimize the risk by flushing the water through your home pipes before starting to use it since most copper comes from inside the home, not from water entering at the street.

I'd give the same advice for those using tap water to replace evaporation in their reef tank.

Vegas has a very hard water with a tds of 575 and I cleaned my sand with a garden hose and threw it directly in my display within minutes and being wet… zero issues! About 200 pounds or so when I upgraded.

Wouldn't CupriSorb plus GFO in a Big Blue canister mixed as done with GAC and GFO not remove these issues.

Yes. Does anyone do that before there's an issue?

You’d be surprised! People walk into these fish stores nowadays knowing nothing and spend hundreds on all sorts of crap they don’t need and put it in their tanks… salesman strike again! I’ve had to correct a few locals tanks for just this reason…. Rrrrr

Doubt it but then it seems all this talk because there is a perceived issue. Just considering options for the overly consumed with fear of the unknown which might be warranted

Honestly feel this is an option for those wanting to rinse any reef equipment in RODI trying to avoid the two main concerns being copper and phosphates. Simple hook up to garden hose spigot plus garden hose attached to effluent allows rinse away at one's hearts contempt without fear of these items affecting what they are cleaning. Better yet, fill it with DI resin and avoid all contaminants. Since this is occasional use then it should last a considerable time and in the long run likely cheaper then running anything through RODI. Going to have more pressure to get the job done quickly and time for me is more valuable than money.

If the concern with phosphate bounding to sand is valid then don't see a better option then removing the phosphate at the source and outside of RODI this to me the best option and considering the simplicity and faster flow seems like the better option. Obviously let the faucet run a few minutes before attaching.

Where'd you find this?

Google but just an illustration. Make your own. Just need the Big Blue casing plus brass connectors for connecting a short hose to spigot and actual hose for cleaning. Also need a DI resin container and choice of resin. Customize you your particular needs.

Commercial units are available but as usual very expensive. Search spotless car wash and RV water filters for ideas

There ain't going to be a lot of contact time, with that however. I expect channeling is amplified with high flow. I use an industrial DI at work, they need to be recirculated to be really effective.

I’ve thought about contact time but then figured it must work since it’s used for spotless cleaning and that is at a rather high flow rate.at least compared to manually using RODI. Not following on what you mean by recirculating and assumed regardless of DI or other mix to just pack it tight as one does with RODI except in a bigger container. Doesn’t the application not work the same outside of contact time as far as avoiding channeling?

High flow DI systems are sent through the resin multiple times as one pass is rarely enough, obviously depending on the required TDS in the product water. We use 35kgs of each anion and cation and produce 11000 to 15000 Litres per day, as required, and it is auto regenerated.

I’m seeking something like this for washing my car. Effluent is zero TDS and water isn’t recirculated. Only modification I’m doing is adding sediment and carbon block ahead of it to remove chloramine. Might drop sediment down to 0.025 and remove pesticides too. Basically an oversized RODI without the RO. The bypass allows me to leave it permanently mounted as I can run water to dump any copper or sediments from my pipes.

Would this not work because everyone I’ve researched has zero TDS? Might as well also use it for cleaning fish related.

Should be ok, it's a good sized one, and presumably sized for the job.
