I had to say goodbye my aquarium and its inhabitants today. My house was not exempt from the massive ice storm that affected most of the midwest, the result of which was a regional power outage that left most of the lower peninsula (Michigan) without power for the majority of the holiday week. I am currently in the process of trying to save the live rock at least, but my two clowns, a goby and his pistol shrimp companion, as well as a hand full of hermit crabs and turbo snails did not survive the week of near freezing temperatures. Right now my live rock is swimming in a rubbermaid container in clean saltwater. Hopefully we can get back up and running soon. I am not letting this tragic event discourage me from staying with the hobby.

Oooouch!! Really sorry to hear that!! There's really no words for when that kind of thing happens...I know firsthand. I feel for you. TT.TT Best wishes for rebuilding.

Sorry to hear that, once you get it back up, I am confident that it will be much better than before

These kind of posts scare me so much. I have access to a generator, I have a battery back up on my pumps, but I still cant imagine having to keep a generator up and going for days on end. I dont have enough fuel around for more than a couple of days. If the gas stations were not operational etc...I guess when its that bad, you just accept the fact and start over.

Good luck with your next build! Your head is definitely in the right place.

so sad to read this you will recover ... .. im from fla now living in KY .. always had my generator hooked up to the house just in case of hurricanes .. during the hat trick we lost power for 5 days .. n up here we got hit 2 weeks ago with a ice storm im so glad i brought my generator up here with me ..

Bummer so sorry. I think we all need to consider a generater for these events. As much money as we have invested in our tanks a generator would be good insurance.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm also from Michigan and that ice storm knocked my power out for 3 complete days. Temps in my apt bottomed out at 54. I managed to save my 90g system (SPS dominated) and my 20g QT tank that was housing a yellow pyramid butterfly and a dispar anthias. It was not easy. I was up 24/7 heating water on my propane stove outside in 9 degree temps to float in the tank and running power heads off a power inverter and car battery (dry cell). The Silent Air B11 was such a huge help. Everyone should have one or three. I had the tanks wrapped in towels, and got a generator on day 2. The tank was 68 degrees at that point as I was fighting a losing battle heating water to float in jugs.
