I have something in my tank ripping my Sunset Dottyback's top fin. It started off with a cut, then a gouge , and now it just looks all ratty. This has taken place in the last two weeks. A couple of days ago, a rip started on my Yellow Watchman's top fin too.
The rips only occur over night.
In the tank (55g with 20L sump) is the Dottyback, Yellow Watchman Goby, 2 clowns, a white pygmy filefish, and a Starry Blenny. CUC consists of 1 emerald crab (that shares the same sleeping structure as the dotty and goby), hermits (tigers, reds, and 1 blue dwarf), 3 astria snails, 1 pink pincushion urchin, and 1 tiger conch.
The fins started getting ripped up after we added the last fish, the Starry Blenny. My husband is convinced that either the blenny or the emerald crab is doing it...but we have no idea. After the initial introduction, the blenny has not gone near any other fish (he did charge at the dotty when we first put him in). I set a trap for the emerald crap (to remove it to my nano tank) but all we caught were the hermits......while the emerald is happily eating algae off of a rock of pallys from the original tank. The emerald's body is about the size of a thumbnail.
The filefish is ORA raised, and generally hangs with our female clown. They had been buddies in the original tank and hasn't given anyone any grief.
I'm just at a loss of what to do. I'm also tired of my husband 'freaking out' over seeing ripped fins every morning.
