I tested my water for mg two days ago and it was at 1200. I did a 5 gal water change that same day . I tested it today and it was 1250 . Can some help and tell what can I use to get my mg to 1400 . Can I use kent mg ? Or do a two part ?

I use kent magnesium to raise my MG, 2 part is for ALK and CAL, if you have low MG it will be hard to raise your ALK and CAL, so all 3 pretty much go hand in hand.

There are lots of products that are good for boosting magnesium, including commercial and DIY products.

This article describes DIY recipes that you can buy the products from various sources, including the drug store, BRS, and Dr Foster and Smith:

Do-It-Yourself Magnesium Supplements for the Reef Aquarium by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com
Hey Randy.

Which product have you encountered gives the best increase (Higher concentration per dosage)?

I wouldn't use that as a guide to the best supplement, but anhydrous magnesium chloride solid gives the highest possible magnesium boost per unit of weight (or volume).

It can be dissolved to almost any concentration you want, but adding less water isn't necessarily an advantage of any sort. :)

I have a question boosting my mg with any method . Will it throw off my cal and alk ? This is my first time running in to this problem .

No, it won't cause any immediate change in calcium or alkalinity.

It may impact demand for calcium and alkalinity in the future (up for some reasons, down for others) and if you are dosing a fixed daily amount of calcium and alkalinity, then those values might change going forward after the magnesium is added. :)

I haven't dosed cal or alk yet . Yesterday when i tested cal was at 400 and alk was at 8 .
