Ok so I have officially lost my 2nd Rittieri now and both passed after about 3-4 weeks in the tank. Does anyone have any real experience with these guys and know some specifics that they do and don't like? I have other anemone's in there (carpet and RBTA) both are doing great.

Alk-7.0
Cal-440
Mag-1300 (although It was higher, around 1800? could this be it?)
temp-78

I run 3 x 250w MH plus 2 bulbs of acintics.

I have 2 black and white clowns that recently host the RBTA but run straight to the Ritteri's when they go into the tank.

Like I said I have other nems in there that are just fine.

Any ideas?

Allelopathy could be an issue but the 3-4 week point screams bacterial infection. Read up on Ciproflaxin treatment. It is not a guarantee but many have had great success in stopping the infection.

The clowns go straight to the Mag because it a natural symbiant, the BTA is not.

Bacterial infection before it came into the tank or after? If it was after shouldn't my other nems be in the same scenario? It is an SPS dominate tank so I am on the "clean" side I would think as far as water goes. Maybe quarantine them before they go in with some medicine? Not sure if I will get another Ritteri anyways, i hate to see them die.

Infection sets in during transit, generally takes a couple of weeks before symptoms show up- deflation cycle, odd waste. 3-4 weeks it's dead. Infection seems to be limited to conspecifics. If you had a healthy Mag and added one with an infection it would likely spread to the healthy Mag but no other species of nem in same tank.

I've QTed 5 Gigs with Cipro. Lost the first three I tried. I waited until I saw symptoms before starting treatment on the first 3 and by that point it was too late. I started treatment immediately on the next two and both made it. Successfully treated two Haddonis with Cipro as well. All of the nems appeared in perfect health upon arrival, minus one that was somewhat bleached.

Cipro has to be dosed in a dedicated hospital tank. Never put in your main system.

Depending on the Carpet (gig or haddoni) they is probably war far going on. I've had it happen several times. I have a large healthy Ritteri and it kills every bta ive ever tired to add sense it was put in the tank. before I could keep bta's with no problem

I think the key is to find one that is healthy already and is acclimated to aquarium life. In a few weeks I will have had mine a year. I haven't done anything special except for sporadic feedings.

I treated my mag cipro when I got it home,it looked healthy but didn't want to chance it.I've had mine for 6 months.

i have never had success with magnificas and carpets in the same system. one or both always ends up stressed and deflated and eventually perish.

as others have said, one of the most crucial things you can do is be patient when selecting a magnifica. many will come in to stores and most will be already on their way out. look for specimens that are rigid, tight mouthed, sticky if possible. i like to see tentacles that are firm and tight, not loose and folded in half.

its a painfully long search, but once you get a healthy one, they are very resilient anemones.

In my experience with Ritteri you need close to perfect conditions to keep them happy. Your nitrates/ phosphates and ammonia needs to be very low. I sucessfully kept one H. Magnifica for 3-4 years so they are not impossible to keep. My guess would be you lost yours due to water quality. I would also mention I've kept at the same time a blue carpet Hadonni, and a RBTA in the same tank. The Ritteri is the most fragile of the Anemones.

Forgot to mention, you want your parameters to be stable. If you are battling fluctuations in your parameters then this will stress a Ritteri for sure.
Aim for Alk 8-9dkh, cal 450, mag 1350-1400. Amonnia <0.25, nitrates <5,phos <0.10
