have a ritteri anemone, over the past week has migrated to the top of the tank. been confused whether its ok or not. but now its at the top of the tank, its top edge is at the top of the water and it looks odd, maybe like its splitting, or else maybe in distress...does anyone have a guess?? thanks

My Ritteri lives at the top of the tank. They really love the light!! They like high flow also. Good luck!

What has changed recently in the tank ( new additions, no water changes, old bulbs) any of these things can make a mag move around. When mine was splitting it would stretch one side of its body over and almost lasso a rock and seem to pull itself apart/away from its oral disc. It is actually in the begining stages of splitting now. This would be the second time its split on me. It just sounds like yours is unhappy and searching for a better spot. Also how new is your tank, any other nems in with it?

Funny I read this post. I have a Ritteri that is a clone from a TOTM local reefer, which he has had for several years. It split and I've had it since the fall. It has traveled a bit around my aquascape, but never travled too far.

Just yesterday it traveled to the glass in the top right hand corner of my tank. This is the first time it has ever traveled on the glass and I am a bit nervous. Should I keep it there or should I try to re-place it on my rockwork? I have seen Ritteri's stay on glass before and been very happy, but I do not like the look.

BTW: I have a very healthy and established sps tank with dead on parameters.

Interested in what others have to say and following this thread.........

TIA

I've found with my mag's they only move when something isn't right. Lights getting old and intensity falls off , change in amount/direction of flow due to coral growth. Corals encroaching on their area. I've also read that different nem species can fight or effect each other. Right now I have 2 H. mags, 2 RBTA's a rock flower and a bi color S. haddoni. I'm waiting to see if the mag and haddoni are going to be affected by each other like i've heard. I really hope not.

I wonder when the nems split did you notice it expanding, almost like engorged, and then it'll close up, almost keeping out clowns.
no other nems in the tank, all other corals seem fine, no others encroaching

No it never really got engorged it would just make one side of itself wider ( imagine a round pizza as normal then grab the dough on one side and stretch it) and hook a rock. Biggest thing I would suggest is check all parameters again and maybe even clean the powerheads( even a little algae on them can effect the flow to the nem and make them unhappy) and how old are the bulbs.

You can see in the pic how it's stretched to the left.

Do a water change. This is pretty normal behavior for Ritteris. When they "Feel Better" than they will settle.

Just wanted 2update, anemone seems fine. All worry for nothing!? An aquarist told me that's why people like nems, nems seemingly odd behavior is their attraction (ok??) I just didn't want any tank tragedy, and a cautious eye suggests all is fine:))

The reason why magnifica/Ritteri anemone move near the overflow box is because they don't have the adequate flow on them so they go searching for it. Lighting is another probable cause but when this happens they dont move towards overflow box. I am sure if you set him where you want with ample flow it will stay... I know this from experience. My mags hasn't move for over 1 yr until I sold him months ago.
