Welcome to r2r

Is this 6 month cycle a necessary process?!
I understand the reefs them selves is a long process but 6 months to get started ?
Totally depends I used dry rock but I seeded my new build with some bio pure blocks from my older tank and I added a lot of shrimp to help cycle and I added a culture to mine cycled in about 3 weeks.

i would not put an sps or lps in a tank until at least 6 months.do people do it?yes.do they survive?often.is the success rate high?i doubt it.because a tank is cycled does not mean it will be successful off the bat.i wouldn't roll the dice for the simple fact corals cost money and I hate to waste it.r2r is full of threads by people with cycled tanks and livestock problems.

A good rule of thumb is other than softies, which you can add almost right off the bat, waiting until you get decent coraline algae coverage and some encrusting sponge growth for adding sps or lps is a good idea.
We haven't exactly pinned down why but new tanks are fairly volitle. The water chemistry that allows sponges and coraline to thrive also seems to line up with what corals need to thrive.
