So I was talked into using 3 Red Sea RL 90s on my 125 at our LFS with plans for an SPS dominant tank, but after doing some reading I am starting to have my doubts about it. Does anyone know how well these actually perform? The plan is for all SPS to be on the rock shelf about midway up through the tank with the RL90s being about 7 inches from the waters surface, separated by glass top. I was told that if I put them in the canopy it would void my warranty so I was wondering if removing the glass top would be beneficial or if fluctuations due to evaporation would hurt the SPS more than the light level? To add as well the wood canopy up above is a must, without it the wife wont allow the tank. I am really hoping I am just overthinking this, given the RL90s were $300 each and I have been out of the hobby for awhile.

I found this on Red Sea's website. Not sure how a glass top 1" off the water surface would effect this.

I think 3 would be the layout for Lps and softies. They don't look like par monsters, I would be after the light green to yellow range according to that graph for growing Acropora. Stylos, digis and montis would be alright for a while but shadowing is also going to be a concern. For sps dominant I think 5 of them would be needed for a 6 ft tank.
Sorry just my opinion.

After measuring it looks like Id be about dead center given my rock ledges are about 12" down. Is there a 6' fixture that would handle SPS while getting complete coverage? Getting two more would be another $600 which while I am not opposed to it I am tempted to go back to the store and throw these danged things at the guy, given its been one thing after another were I took their word for it and was guided the wrong direction when budget was not an issue...from a specialty shop even. The wife is interested in LPS and Softies so I could easily re-purpose them to hers, or just add two more if they will for sure run SPS with 5. What about crochea and maximas? I have heard they need strong lighting as well.

So looking at the tank, and adjusting a few things I could possible make room for 1 more RL90. In addition I am using the mounting holes they drilled in the canopy as vent holes for the exhaust so dropping them to sit on the glass and be 1" off from the water should work mechanically. I am no expert by any means with photoshop but if I calculated the 7" drop correctly and adding a 4th it should look something like this, too bright? Or still not enough at the rock shelf level? I would like 5, but the center braces pose an issue with centering them on the tank.
