Ok, so I upgraded my tank to a 37 gallon and I wanted to do this whole thing as best I could. The transfer was successful so far. I purchased a RO Buddie 4 stage and was just about finished filling the tank when I noticed the sediment filter was a very dark brown. I checked the the water and it was reading 30ppm. The water pressure was still at 50 psi. I contacted Aquatic life and I was told that because I am from New York that I really needed a pre sediment filter to lengthen the life of my unit. I only produced 25 gallons, so you can imagine my surprise. My ppm before using the unit is only 54 ppm. I have a few questions. Does anyone else have this problem? I live in Bensonhurst Brooklyn. Will the pre sediment help my situation? There supposed to last 6 months. At this rate, I will be buying them bi weekly. Another thing, they sent me links for the pre sediment canister and filters. What micron size do I use? Sorry for the lengthy post, but I’m still learning.

I use them , I have 2 , I used the first 1 for 3 years with no filter changes in LI , and was getting 5ppm , I noticed last week they sent us all the "bad" water that causes diatoms no matter what filter you use. All the LFS have it too this week. ( Diatoms) I might be setting up a PURA UV BB 3 inline before my RODI I think they are fine units though.

I've been off of Long Island for 12 years now, but always had good "RO friendly" water for the 40 years I was there. I'm not sure I'm buying their explanation.

@Paul B is still there and may have some additional insights...

I know. That’s why I’m asking. The ppm is at 50 prior to running through the system. But to only get 25 gallons. The sediment is so dark. They sent me a new one, which was good. I also took there suggestion and will be adding a pre sediment filter. I’m using the hose faucet in my garage. Does that have anything to do with it? It pretty much comes from the water supply coming into the house.

I just stumbled upon this thread. I live in Manhattan and was just noticing how my sediment filter was dark brown after my first use (around 25 gallons). Ugh! Will have to look into changing / adding a pre-sediment filter...

You get what you pay for. Water is the most important aspect of your tank. You live in a city of filth so I'd take every precaution I could when it comes to my family... yes my tank is part of my family.

I added 2 prefilters and it does the trick. I get a lot more out of my system. The first sediment filter gets filthy and has to be changed every few weeks but that’s ok. It saves the system I have and the presediments aren’t that expensive.

Try high efficiency sediment filters. You can add more pre filters to prolong the life of your DI resin. I live out in Jersey and my water pre RO/DI is 6 TDS. Prefilters and the RO bring the TDS to 1-2ppm and the DI takes care of the rest.

Maybe try getting a booster to increase your pressure to make your RO/DI unit more efficient.

Do you also know how to change out your prefilters and more importantly the DI resin? Packing the DI tight into the filter is not the easiest thing to do and you might have to repack it depending to reduce channeling.

Thanks for the note. What / where can you buy the pre-filter? I tried looking at a few stores online and didn't see anything. I normally had a local guy change water for me since my Manhattan apt not the most conducive to making RO water, but that's out the window now with the lockdown....

I went online and purchased them. Amazon has them and I bought the filters off of them too. They are good quality. They sell them on bulk reef supply and marine depot as well. I had to put out a little more money, but it’s worth it. I haven’t had to change anything on the main system yet and it’s 5 moths later. Good luck.

Thanks. My RO unit already has a sediment filter. To be clear, you are talking about an additional filter or am I good (before hits the sediment filter on my RO)? Sorry if a silly question;0
