I all. I have been wondering if RO.Di machines are really economical. I have read that to get 1 gallon of RO water, you dump 3 to 4 gallons in the drain. With the cost of water these days, is it really economical. Right now I have a supplier who sells me RO/DI water for 1.99 for 5 gallons. I would like to get a machine simply for the easy of not having to run all the time. I have two tanks, on is 75 gallon with a 30 gallon sump and the other is a 36 gallon bf plus a 20 gallon qt tank. It seems I am always running for water. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well if you are worried about the wast water then you can get a water saver RODI which cuts the waste water by at least half I believe. They are more money of course.

If your system is over 100 gallons then I definitely recommend you get a RODI unit.

Or you can use the waste water for the laundry? Summer time, water the garden haha

Mine waste 4 gallons for every 1 gallon clean. I catch my waste water & water my plants with it. Either way, my plants get watered but in this case there is no additional water used. It can get costly at times. It is all dependent upon how much it's worth to you. Example: I hate when I run out of RO water on Sunday because most LFS's close early. Than I have to race to the LFS to get water. Also, some of the LFS's water isn't always perfectly clean. I have actually ran into nitrates being present in one of the LFS's RO water. When you can make your own water, you know exactly what is going into it. Right down to the salt mix. IMO that is worth a lot to me.

Honestly, you have over 100 gallons of salt water aquaria in your home. Unless someone has a nano tank, an RO/DI filter should really be one of your initial purchases. So many reefers consider getting their own unit as an afterthought. I can't even imagine not having one.

You would probably save enough money in gas and the cost of your current RO/DI water compared to the amount of water that you waste.

your water bill will go up about $5 a month and the waste water will go down the drain, through the sewer system and get processed at a sewage plant where it will get used again....nothing is wasted

I used to also buy my water a LFSs but once I got one of BRS RO/DI systems i am spending way less then driving to the LFS paying for water driving back. Also my RO now feed my ice maker my drinking water at the kitchen sink and the DI reactor feeds my tanks. And the wast water I use to water plants and water for the dogs ect... Spend the 200 bucks and pick up a RO/DI system
