I'm at the new house and am going to mount the RO/DI unit. I have two options. I can either mount it in the laundry room and run lines to the garage to the storage barrels, or I can run one hose through the wall and keep everything in the garage.

I would prefer to keep it in the garage but my only hesitation is when it gets cold. So what do you guys do that have the RO/DI in the garage to keep it from freezing during winter?

mines in garage.. haven't had a problem, but it doesn't get that cold here how cold does your garage get

I have mine in the garage, but I am looking to move it into my basment because the water gets so cold. I don't think it will ever freeze since I don't think it gets cold enough in there but the water does get down to 55-60 degrees which is a pain in the but when I want to mix my water or top off my tank. If I was just setting it up now, I would put it inside the house if I could. JMO

RODI in an unheated garage where I am would be unheard of as it wouldn't take more than 30 minutes during our coldest months to freeze up the whole RODI system...

I am assuming your storage barrels will have heaters to prevent freezing, but the best solution would be to keep your garage at slightly above freezing at all times with a small heater. I know here a garage heated to 40 degrees is really nice as the ice and snow will melt off the car by the next day. This way you wouldn't have to worry about the barrels or the RODI. A small garage heater may even end up being cheaper than using aquarium heaters in the barrels.

I don't know how cold it gets. I moved in here this week and am looking to set things back up. The old house I had the RO/DI sitting on the floor in the laundry room.

The RO/DI water didn't have a heater in it but that wasn't an issue because I had an ATO that it went into. It never froze or really got below 50ish at the old house, but with 55g of water I wasn't surprised.

The salt barrel has a heater and keeps it at 78 degrees.

I may just mount it in the laundry room up out of the way, and run the lines through the wall. Winter is over now and it shouldn't get that cold again but I just didn't want to move it in 6 months.

If it gets cold it would cost a fortune to run the heaters in winter months and they probably would not keep up if they are large barrels. Maybe partition a part of the garage off and use a space heater, kind of a fish room?

I am fortunate my garage is climate controlled summer and winter here in Phoenix but before I installed an insulated garage door, upgraded the wall and ceiling insulation and added AC it was the heat I had to worry about in summer.

MIne is in the garage too. I have had no issue with it freezing. I have it going into a 35 gallon barrell but i have a heater and a powerhead too. All i do is in the winter time i turn up my heater so far it has never frozen on me.
