RO/DI needs in nano tanks...

I was speaking with someone over the weekend who explained that he set up an 5 gallon AIO.

He went on to say that he wanted to stock it with some frags, but the quality of the water he purchases is less than satisfactory.

I suggested an RO/DI filter so that he could prepare his own. But he is reluctant to spend a few hundred dollars on an RO/DI filter when he has such small needs.

Any alternatives to spending the money on an RO/DI filter? I told him I didn't see any.

I think he will realize that (depending on the frags that he gets) that the cost of maintaining them (test kits, salt/dosing, RO) are more than just the cost of the frags. If he's worried about water quality then getting his own unit is a no brainer. I'm sure he could find a used one and get new filters...

+1 but also with such a small water volume everything needs to be more exact, little room for errors!

Doesn't matter about the size of the tank, you have to maintain the quality of the water going into your tank. There are many economy sized RO/DI units on the market. A small cost in the overall husbandry costs of a tank. No need to purchase nice frags to have them covered in algae due to less than clean water going into his tank!

On the plus side, if he gets an RODI unit, he wont go through filters very fast with such a low water volume needing to be made!

buy one with a much smaller capacity like ro buddy or just get a really good rodi source.

My first ro/di was the RO Buddie. I hated it. It founds it's way to the trash can after 3 months. Second one was the BRS 4 stage. I hated myself for never buying that 4 stage to begin with.

really? what did you hate? I got the 4 stage BRS used btw, $55 and a full set of filters new is $75? i think?

Biggest issue was the lack of
TDS meter,
pressure gauge,
faucet adapters,
no extra tubing,
took 3 hours for 5 gallons,
filters were exhausted after 3 months.
And I tasted the water once and it tasted like chemicals.


BRS 4 stage filters...
Last me a year,
comes with everything,
takes only 1 hour for 5 gallons.

+1 on a good rodi source. Since it's a small tank and there's not a need for too much top-off (and mix if he's making his saltwater), save the trouble of picking out what type of unit and having to set it up and just find a source that keeps up on low TDS levels.
