I live in the country and have well water. I have a water filtration unit to because we have high iron in our water. I also have a water softener. My question is do I need the whole RO/DI system or just the DI? Thanks

You will need the whole RO/DI system due to the iron and sodium from your softener. Both would be detrimental.

If you don’t have the RO membrane in the mix you will go through DI resin like crazy. The RO is cheaper in the long run as it stretches the life of your resin and the membrane also doesn’t need replacement that often.

You would still benefit from the RO and its sediment and carbon blocks. The money you would save in all cases on not ripping through DI resin would more than pay for the increased cost of the RO/DI.

What if I was to bypass the softener?
Still the same unless your well water is really pure. An RO membrane will usually reduce the TDS in your water to below 10. Your DI resin will then take care of the rest and get consumed taking up the rest of those dissolved solids. My City tapwater is usually around 350 TDS, which would eat through a canister of DI resin like nobody’s business. Do you have a TDS meter to check your well water?

Don’t get me wrong, you could certainly run straight DI and probably get pretty pure water. You will likely just spend a lot of money on resin. You could try it out and see how it works if you’re dead set on it.

No I don’t.
