I was wondering what are good containers for ro/di water and what is the best way to clean an out a container

I rinsed mine out a few times with hot water.

(Left) 35g trash can with heater and power head for mixing my salt water. (Right) two 5g containers that I store my top off water in.

90g FOWLR
Foxface lo x 1
Ocerllaris clown x2
Blue spotted Toby puffer x1
Red legged hermit crab x 5-10
Snails x 5
Short spine urchin (red) x 1
Conch x 1
Chocolate chip starfish x 2

Look for containers that are food grade for safely storing potable water. You can re-use a container that has previously help food goods like syrup, vinegar, and even ones that help peroxide. HDPE barrels will not leach chemicals into your RODI once cleaned out well unless they previously contained petroleum products.

Check out a livestock vet or livestock supply store for plastic barrels. Bottling companies also have them available from time to time.

If you don't go this route, many use the Brute garbage cans as they are NSF potable water safe.

I never store saltwater now bc of what azdesert rat said, keeping saltwater to long will cause it to lose the "good stuff" in it.

I got my 35 brute can from home depot with a lid for 15 bucks.

i just store reg ro/di water with no power head or anything in it

I guess I should elaborate. If I fill my 35g can with RODI water and then mix the salt in the day before I do my water change, am I still going to lose stuff from my water?

no thats fine. just dont store saltwater for much longer then that. to be honest i make it up a few hours before the change just to be safe. you can store the ro water in the 35g can as long as needed.

What do you do about matching the salinity and temp if you do it a few hours before and don't use a heater?

i do use a heater but when i doing small water changes like 10-15 even 20 gallons doesnt take long to heat up, plus the water stays in hte garage which is heated and always warm

Ah, gotcha.

do you need to keep the ro/di water aerated? Ive had some sitting in a 45 gallon brute with a lid on and it can smell funky but this just could be the smell of DI water?

No you do not want to aerate stored RO/DI water, it will attract TDS if you do.

If the water has a fishy smell your DI resin is probably close to exhaustion.

Here is a note from Spectrapures website FAQ on the fishy smell:
"Type 1 Strong based Anion resins release very low levels of amines (trimethylamine). A very low threshold of 5 PPB or greater will cause a fishy odor to be noticeable. The odor is most noticeable when the resins are new and when they are at or near the point of exhaustion.
NOTE: Trimethylamine is also released by decomposing fish which also results in the same type of odor."

I would use a container safe for food storage, like said in the first thread. Many containers can leech chemicals back into the water, causing elevation in your TDS reading.

Someone before said to aerate the water for 24 hours before adding it to the tank... and another said aerating the water will increase the tds... which is true?

Not necessary. If it is for top offs the amount is so small the dissolved oxygen is not an issue.
If its for a water change, the small amount of time it takes to mix the salt with a powerhead or pump is sufficient in almost all cases. years ago they used to recommend mixing and aerating NSW for 24 hours before using it but it has been shown that this does not apply today with modern salt mixes and RO/DI water, it mixes up almost instantly with no flashing, DO or pH problems.

I keep RO/DI water for months or years on end without aerating it. I drained and cleaned out my 23 gallon ATO storage for the first time in 4 years about a year ago and the TDS was still at 0. same as it was when it was made. It was the first and only time it has ever been empty or cleaned and it was in good shape minus a couple of silverfish bugs that had managed to get in the lid and were attached to the pklastic above the water level. I also keep 5 5G drinking water jugs around for water changes and some of them are 6 months old if I forget to rotate them to the front with no issues at all.
