Hey guys,

just bought a 4 stage RO/DI filtration system.
Should I also use the DI cartridge or am I fine with just the first 3?

If this is for a reef tank, then the DI stage is necessary. Why are you wanting to remove the DI stage?

i read on another post that someone removed the DI stage because it’s beneficial for PH balancing??
Glad I asked tho! Thanks everyone!

IMO worrying too much about PH before even making RO/DI water is putting the cart before the horse.

You’re going to achieve PH balance/consistency (which is far more important than chasing the 8.3ph grail) through other means that are more impactful and sustainable. Like your protein skimmer pulling fresh air into the water column, opening your windows and lowering that CO2 content, a refugium running a contrary lighting schedule to your display tank. That’s where you take care of your PH. I wouldn’t stress to much about it before even making your water.

Unfortunately there are people on here that tout their success through untraditional means. And for them that's great, but the majority of other people that try their method ends up falling on their face and create more problems in the long run.

When it comes to water filtration many factors have to be applied. Where you're located, what's in your tap water? What your municipality adds to the water supply? Etc.

There are certain locations that have some success with only RO water. But in a hobby with so many variables, it's best to start with zero tds and add exactly what is necessary. And having control of that will aid in ruling out source water as the culprit to something going wrong with your reef tank.

not your question but... when you're flushing carbon cartridge remove it from the RO membrane, otherwise all that carbon dust that you're trying to flush goes to RO membrane. disconnect that blue tube that goes into the the membrane from the carbon block then reconnect after flushing.
