Hi all,

Getting closer and closer to finally installing a RO/DI with storage/mixing stations. Have most/all the parts, now need to get to work.... so much work....

I've got 2 blue 55 gallon water drums with lids and metal locks on the lids. I'm thinking this would make them fairly airtight.

My question is regarding pressure release for the containers. Do I need a small hole to vent the pressure while the drums are filling? I don't see much about this discussed... I'm planning on rarely opening my RO/DI drum... the salt drum obviously will be opened whenever salt water is mixed...

TIA,

-David

You do need a vent otherwise it will pressurize and impact your water making. Run a vent from your RODI barrel to your SW mixing barrel, that way if your RODI overflows while filling it will go into the SW.

I do plan on having an emergency overflow plumbed to the SW mixing barrel, but unless I'm making SW, that barrel will be sealed as well...

If I had to add a small vent (maybe 1/8" hole drilled), logic tells me do it on the SW mixing barrel vs the RO/DI barrel, right? And maybe plug the vent hole with some filter floss or something....

just surprised I don't see a vent hole mentioned more with all the mixing station threads/posts...

Lots of the lids have vents in them already, particularly if they came with a metal ring

I personally wouldn’t use the metal rings- I have corrosion on mine from just sitting next to the sw barrel for the past 3 months.

Jut having the lid on would be enough to prevent dust contamination etc ifbtjats what your worried about

But yeah- if you wanted to, a 1/8” hole, covered with some filter floss pad and s bit of tape to hold it on would work. Put it on the back so it’s hidden

Why’d you think only the sw would need it?

IMHO, Both would need it, unless you’re going to release the sw lid before you dump the rodi in. You pumping or letting gravity do the work?

weird, mine have the metal rings that lock the lid but the lids don't have vents.... oh, just noticed I have the same drums as Neil (no vent on those lids...)

I was thinking I would only need one vent for both barrels if I have a separate overflow pipe that's always open connecting the 2... right?

I'm planning on using gravity to feed RO/DI into the Salt drum... at least for now until I can find a good deal on an external pump. hehe

oh wait, can't see the vents on ur 2nd post... I guess they're not visible from certain angles. off to inspect the barrels closer.

Lol, yeah, weird angle, but no vent on lower lid- I keep it loose since I’m adding salt and making water a bunch

The lid for that one was cracked, so replaced it with s non vented

As long as your overflow pipe is open, yes, it will work as a vent for both. Can’t just connect the two, would need a t near the top of the rodi barrel to let air escape

no vents on my lids. darn it... should've thought of this before placing my uniseal order... Amazon has spoiled me so that I hate paying for shipping now... lol
