Just wanted to see how long everyone allows their top off/wc to sit prior to using it. A buddy of mine brought to my attention that his top off water sits for about a week (usually) and he just realized it's starting to slime on the interior walls of his brute container. Without testing it, he poured it out, but thought this could be ammonia build up (possibly from his well water After going thru his ro/di setup and sitting). Any thoughts??? And does anyone utilize a stabilizer (like Seachem's Prime) if they let it sit?? Thanks

I make mine in 5 gallon batches. Usually about 4 buckets worth (20 gallons). It lasts me about a month. I have never had an issue with mine. I did wonder if the water would test out ok so, I did a test on it. All came back good.

Are your buckets sealed for the month? Just wondering if that has an effect too.

Yes covered and they sit in the hall closet.

I think that may be the key to keep it in (good) condition is keeping it covered/sealed. I'm thinking that the air mixing with the clean water, plus sitting there (for more than 24 hrs), is causing a slime coat or unwanted growth (ammonia or bad bacteria). Just my thoughts. Thanks

I keep a 180 gallon vat w fresh ro in it keep it covered w power head in it, if you don't put a power head in it it will start to smell horid in a few days!

Do you know what causes the smell?

Stagnant water, but is it safe still? If not, what is so bad in it and what would you guys do to get the holding tank back to usable status?

I keep 55 gallons in a bin that does not have a power head and is not covered in the garage. Has a slight smell but have never had a problem with it.

I keep mine in a 32g can covered without a power head. It takes me about a week to use it. Never had any trouble.

If it is RO/DI I can't see ammonia being in it as it goes into the bucket. And if there is bacteria in it once you add salt to it I think the FW bacteria would just die off. But if you tank is cycled to should not be a problem for your live rock to take care of.

I keep a 23 gallon Rubbermaid can full for my ATO system and just cleaned it for the FIRST time in 5 years about a month ago. It was still clean inside and the TDS was still at 0 so it really didn't need much attention. I also keep five 5G drinking water jugs of RO/DI on hand at all times for water changes, some of them may be 6 months old if I forget to rotate them out and has never been an issue.

I kinda was waiting for your response (I know your the usual go to for ro/di)<< at least from the threads I've read. Is your 23g sealed 24/7?? I think that might have played a role along with lack of circulation. Many thanks

I keep my ro/di in a 30g glass aquarium and it sits without water movement no problems....even exposed to some light. My mixed saltwater sits in a brute trash can and did get an ammonia smell to it, so it now has a power head in there for circulation.

What else is in the container? Heater? Other? I attribute my ammonia smell to my heater not being entirely clean when I left it in the brute.

Nothing was in the container except a pump and hose (used to extract ro/di in buckets). The container is a plastic 55g drum w/o a lid. Pumping water and carrying buckets was easier on the back than moving a almost full 55g drum on a dolly. The interior walls and the hose n pump setup would slime over.

My 23 gallon Rubbermaid has a lid but is not really sealed. And you are correct, adding a pump or air does add TDS and I have neither.

I have 2 trash cans I use . 1 for ro and 1 for salt. both have a heater and a small powerhead in them and never had a problem . Neither sit for more then 2 weeks before getting used though.

That's crazy, I forgot the circ pump off on my 180 gallon vat and with in a few days my basement smelled horid! Also by adding circulation or air how does that raise tbs? My vat has a tds of 003 and ill use half the vat and then refill!

Just like acid rain, airborne pollutants can get pulled into the water such as dust etc.
