so i don't have any RO/DI water right now need a new system as well but the problem is when i did have a system and stored my water my grandpa would always yell at me for wasting water or when i stored it he would then dump rain water into the bin thus ruining it.
could someone please suggest me some systems where i can just feed the RO/DI water straight into my tank when i need it. i do have a hose outside of my window i can feed the water into but then the issue arises when i need to do water changes and if i need to turn off the filter or power head then it will be some time until i can turn them back on again if it produces at a slow rate.
i have room in my bedroom closet for a trash can to store it in as well but i have carpet in here and lots of electronics as well so if it spills i am fked.
any suggestions for my problems as well as an RO/DI system? im kind of on a budget right now trying to redo my entire system by next summer with a whole new set up maybe bigger or the same size which is 55gals atm.
I'd start by breaking your grandpa's hip. Then verbally make it clear that one day you will be in charge and if he ever touches your fish gear again you'll hurt him in a way that'll make him unrecognizable as a man.
I'm just kidding, don't do any of that stuff.
The wife buys distilled water from dollar general for the coffee maker like this:
I take the empty jugs and fill them up with rodi for small tasks. I have about 15 of them filled up at any given time.
Then I have a couple of these aquatainer jugs like this:
They're 7 gallons and have a cool spigot. You can get them at Walmart for about 15 bucks. I keep a couple of them full for bigger tasks like water changes.
thanks yea i wrote down on my bin but he clearly doesn't read it and ignores it. does the same exact thing to everyone elses stuff thats why my parents get mad at him. i was thinking of using the RO/DI water from say petco thats bottled up and just using those. sucks though because here the distilled water or bottled ro/di water is very expensive compared to tap water.
any suggestions on an RO/DI system though? i had i think a 50gph one forgot what make and it had a lot of waste water. the sink i used to make it in the garage didn't have a high psi though so i will try the hose outside my window. also do you know how often you should be changing the filters? will be purchasing one online no stores here carry ro/di systems in various brands and gph's or filters for that matter.
I got this on amazon for $70. I picked up a TDS meter for about 20 bucks. The unit as pictured without the DI filter puts out water with 1ppm total dissolved solids. I got the DI add on later for about another 20 bucks. The three stage system worked fine for me and is 100 GPD.
i had the aquaFX 50gpd one i believe. it was good but wasted too much water for me. think i will buy the same one maybe more GPD this time for faster water so i don't have to run it as long.
i am watching this video about RO/DI systems and the guy making the video from the company says to remove the 3rd filter in a 4 stage system and to let it run for 1-2gals then replace the filter. something about wasting it because the TDS won't be 0. is this true? my last Ro/DI system i didn't do this and when i set this one up want to make sure im doing it right this time. likely won't be getting a TDS meter any time soon it is cheap but just don't have the money for that right now.
Who knows man. These guys making videos are crazy. It might work. I usually turn the water to my setup on and watch the tds meter until it gets to 1 and bottle from then on. Usually takes about 16 oz or so, not much. I may be doing it wrong. Although, my fish are living.
thanks yea i thought fk it why guess so i just ended up buying a TDS meter as well. hopefully it comes in by friday but if not will surely test next week. thanks for the help
the same one, AquaFX barracuda 100gpd this time. i had the 50gpd one. 4 stages. just going to run it and do like what you do and save them in small containers after i replace all the tap water in my tank with ro/di water. i think that is the biggest issue for now.
Those aquatainers from Wally world are great. The spigot will screw into the underside of the lid for storage and they're stackable. The only problem with them is that they're heavy when full. I usually fill the smaller containers from the bigger ones. The 1/4" tubing fits perfectly into the hole in the spigot of the aquatainer, so I set the aquatainer in a garbage can and run the output tube of the rodi into it. The garbage can is to keep me from flooding the house in the event that fall asleep of just forget that it's running.
we don't have wally world here. all we got is a petco and LFS but they usually don't sell much fish supplies if they do usually it's for fresh water tanks only as those are more common here. closest thing to containers these stores sell are the ones you use for gasoline or buckets. even the petco here only sells buckets. they sell the RO/DI with those square containers that you buy bulk oil in but i think they are like 25gals per container? and pricey as fk. think last time i went it was $30.
Walmart. I was just making a pun when I called it Wally World. At Walmart the aquatainers come from the camping section I believe. They're for storing drinking water. About $14.
i'll check but i don't think they carry them our wal marts are different since shipping fee's usually cost a lot they tend to carry less variety. it's how lots of stores are here thus why everyone buys online if they are looking for specific products
Hawaii on Oahu. people tell me to use the ocean water but i don't trust it. i seen the water in various beaches here i wouldn't put that stuff in my aquariums.
yea true i guess people tend to think that because i live here i can get free supplies but we do have strict laws only can take certain amount of everything including water per day or not at all. like we can't buy or sell corals here i think zoa's are legal but you have to get them locally which many people don't even have you can't buy them online either most stores won't ship them to you.
