Looking for an RO/DI unit but not sure I understand what a complete setup is and how it is used. Anybody have pics of their system to post?
I do a 5 gallon water change every week in my 28 gallon nano (Sometimes 10 but not very often), so a smaller system would do for now.
Specific questions are:
  • how does the raw water supply connect?
  • where does the filtered water go? Can it be collected in a storage tank (bucket)?
  • where does the waste water go?
  • How much maintenance does the system require?
Any good articles out there, links would be appreciated.
I've been looking at The Filter Guys setups........ Do any of our sponsors sell them?
Thanks, and pics would be great!

RO/DI systems can be hooked up to a kitchen or bathroom faucet using a faucet adapter or they can be more permanent depending on your needs. I use a brass garden hose wye fitting on the cold water supply to my washing machine so one side feeds the washer and the other my RO/DI. The treated water goes into a bucket or Rubbermaid trash can and the waste goes down the drain but can be used for landscape watering and other uses easy enough.

Maintenance is minimal, you change the sediment andcarbon block filters every 6 months or so and monitor the treated water TDS to see when the DI cartridge needs changing, usually hundreds of gallons or more.

There are a ton of articles at this link under FAQ, Education Center and Tech Support/Hook up diagrams.

They also have Sponsors Forums on many of the reef sites.

For $120 you will not find a better system anywhere than the one at the top of the webpage.

The way water feeds into my system is the same as AZDesertRat's. I'll occasionally pull my waste water and fill up the washing machine as to not waste as much water. Just remember, unless you shell out the big bucks for a water saver system you will have a lot more waste water than ro/di. Keep this in mind when when choosing a location for your set up.
Another very important thing to consider is some sort of shut off float valve. I know you will be making 5 gallons at a time but trust me, things happen! The last thing you want to happen is having to leave the house and then realizing you left your rodi system running.
