I have a ro/di system, but am unable to hook it up to my faucet at this time. Is this required to make salt water?

Depends on your source water. But in my opinion yes absolutely.

Absolutely necessary. . . No. beneficial - Yes
If you already have a unit- by all means use it. Do you want to risk this below ??

what is the size of the tank?
you can hook up via sink /washroom or outside house
if tank is small enough you can buy distilled water from the supermarket till you figure it out

Do you have a washer/dryer unit in the house? You can unhook the cold water from the washing machine and use that. You can even use the waste water to fill the machine to run a load through so you don't waste all that water.

I guess it depends on your local water.. Im in Nirthern virginia. We all get our water from the occoquan river and the water is fine.

I have a 60g 30g and 135g reefs.. tons of fish with 70+ different corals.. no issues.

I dont even have hair algae. I HAD hair algae in the begging but as the tank matured it went away.. especially with tangs. Urchins and snails.. I cant even find a spec of nussiance algae if i looked.

So id say anyone who uses RODI in the Northern Va area is wasting their time and money with RODI but thats just me .

I mesn i litterally drain my tanks into the tub. Then refill directly from the sink using my python.. Chloramines and all.. thats what prime is for... I mix my salt in 5g buckets.. check salinity and dump it right in.. 10-20-50,60% water changes doesnt do anything
