Currently setting up a 75 gallon salt. Having some troubles with nuisance algae and I am old it is because I use tap water instead of ro/di (opps!). Is it true I have to buy an RO/DI filter instead of just an RO system?

It is possible your still introducing phosphates into your tank. Not just with water but also by the foods we feed. RO/DI is better then just RO.
Running some GFO or a Phosphate sponge would help greatly.

I actually haven't fed my tank in a while because I didn't want to entice the algae and I have no fish.

RO by itself only does 90-98% of the treatment, it takes the DI to do the final polishing. RO acts as pretreatment for DI so it lasts longer and works better.
