I'm setting up a 40b and wondering if it's worth spending the money on a ro/di filter system for my house instead of buying water. My lfs sells ro/di for $0.39/gallon and salt water for $0.99/gallon. Not sure how long the filters last, etc...

Thanks for any advice.

I ran an 8g then a 26g and now a 40B. Wouldn't run a reef tank without one. My filters last me about a year, membrane 2yrs and DI resin about 2-3 months. I make about 60-70g of water a month in the winter, (more evap)
Depending on your water change schedule and amount, do the math. Personally I trust myself before anyone else with my water source :)

A source of reliable water is at the top of my list. Its cheap insurance when you consider how much you may have invested in the reefs contents. Besides the reef you can add a drinking water kit to the RO/DI and have safe, good tasting water fro drinking, cooking, icemaker and pet watering too. We save a ton by refilling water bottles versus buying cases of throw aways.

absolutely yes. I bought one when I had my 15g and now that I'm running a 40b it's even handier, no more gallon jugs.

I have a 40B and advise the RODI system; I've crunched the numbers and I do save a few hundred bucks annually and going to my LFS to buy water had become a chore.

+1 on getting your own RODI. Good systems are not expensive and so much more convenient.
