Ro vs. ro/di water

Hi ace,

It is best to use ro/di because it is literally pure h2o, meaning there are no other elements in the water. Or at least there shouldn't be! Remember not to drink di water either! But if you do have RO, it's not the worst thing to use as top off water.

RO by itself is not particularly good at removing some things like phosphates, silicates and nitrates. It is 90-98% better than tap water but its the DI that gets you the rest of the way there.
If you are purchasing water for a small system then use distilled water if you cannot find RO/DI. Many bottled RO waters actually have minerals added back for taste since its for drinking and human consumption and its the minerals that make water taste good. If you are making your own you can get an add on DI filter for around $50 +/- from many vendors.
You are fortunate in the Atlanta area to have extremely low TDS compared to most places but RO/DI is still the way to go if possible.

There is nothing wrong with drinking RO/DI water but it will have a very bland blah taste since it is stripped of all minerals. This is an old wives tale that has been cussed and discussed for years but never proven. People have been trying to prove it but all tests come out inconclusive since humans cannot live on water alone and eating even one potato chip adds back everything removed in gallons of treated RO/DI.

I would always use RO/DI water, you don't know what is in the plain RO water -- odds are it will be okay, but why take the chance.

Let's say that your tap water's TDS is 200.
Your RO membrane brings that down to 20 (( assuming an RO membrane with a rejection rate of 90% )).
Normally the DI resin would bring that down to 0, but you skipped this part; can you tell me what makes up that 20 TDS? There could be something harmful to your tank in that "20", so why risk it?
