I got my first Rock Anemone a couple weeks ago. It seemed like it had settled in on a rock at the bottom of the tank, them moved onto the sand. It was burrying into the sand, then dissappeared. I have looked everywhere, but he has not been seen. Can they, or will they totally bury themselves? Any suggestions where I might look? I've checked my powerheads. It has been "lost" for a couple days. Maybe it died? It was about the size of a quarter.

They will bury themselves completely when stressed or whatever. They will also move completely into the rockwork and disappear for months. I have one that does both from time to time. Just let it do its thing. Theyre pretty hard to kill.

Ok, thanks for your reply! I kinda thought that it buried, because the sand pile where he was would change. I'm glad to hear that. It's a pretty one!

I 2nd KirbyM. I have 5 of these. They all act differently. I have one that will burrow in the sand and another that will hide completely in the rock work. The other three stay put. Stress, to much light or to much flow can cause them to act that way. Let the anemone do its thing.

Thanks! That makes me feel better! A question: If I get another one, should I place it in a different area from the one that I think is buried, since it didn't like that spot? How much light do they like? The one that I have is 38" below my Radion Gen 2 light on the sand bed.

I've had luck placing them in empty barnacle shells or large turbo snail shells, similarly to vendors using PVC caps. They'll feel secure and won't wander. Not always the case though but it works pretty well.

Thats a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like your lights are fine. I wouldn't think that's the issue. You can place it near the other one if you want. If it was me I would place it in a different area and see what happens.

Well, it's been 4 months , still no sign of the anemone. Since then, I purchased two more (both at the same time). I placed them in a different areathis time, than the first one. One of them had already floated away by the next morning. The other one did good for a week, then I came home to find that the little rock he was on had been disturbed, and he was gone. That's been two weeks ago. There is no sign of any of them.
Is there a trick to keeping them in place? Perhaps maybe putting some netting loosely around the rock til they settle??

It is very unusual that three would disappear on you. What are your tanks current residents?

I have a chocolate tang, lyretail anthias, fire goby, two clowns, freidmani pseudochromis, ornate wrasse, lubbocks wrasse, exquisite wrasse, cleaner shrimp, fire shrimp, and a fromia star.

I have 2 RA's and there on the same rock about 8" away from each other.
Maybe change your flow direction, but sounds like a bad batch or your waters off, which means other stuff is stressing out as well. Are fish or anything else reacting?

I have had many and still do. Some like high on the rocks, some under rocks and some midway. I have had mine disappear for months. I mean one was gone 6 months or more. I figured it was gone, then, one day it appeared in a totally different area of the tank. It was a pink zebra one, so cool it came back. It moves as corals grow around it. Just keep an eye out. they may come back tiny and in totally different areas.

As far as a trick, never found one that worked for me. I have tried basket with rock to get attached then put in tank, holding on rock for a few minutes to foot, no flow and trap them in area. They all eventually move. Nems. Gotta love them.

All my corals and livestock are thriving. It's just those three nems....

One other weird thing....I cannot grow zoos or palys in this tank either. They grow and spread for awhile, then out of the blue, they start running off to....Have tried for three years:(

No, those peticular ones never showed up, but I have since had some that wandered around and some days may not see them. But they are still hanging around. I find that those that do that do not really grow much. But the ones that stay put get to be a nice size-3-4 inches. Maybe the ones that never seem to be happy are not very healthy to begin with? That is just my experience with them.
Also, I would ike to ad that I had one that was beside a Lobo for about 2 years, then one day the Lobo stung and melted half of it away. It looked very bad, was mushy, and I thought for sure it was a goner! It was about 4 inches around before getting stung. It had one half of its mouth left, so it did miraculously recover. But It has moved around ever since then (for about two years) and now it is not happy and only half of its original size.
